Takuhaibin - Delivery Services

Home - Travel
Takuhaibin Delivery Services

Takuhaibin Service Center

Takuhaibin is a convenient service for sending parcels, luggage and various other types of goods from door to door nationwide. Delivery is usually on the next day, and costs are moderate.

Yamato Transport started the service in the 1970s and remains the market leader with their Takkyubin service. Although it is a registered trademark, Takkyubin commonly also refers to takuhaibin services in general. Other major companies include Sagawa Express (Sagawakyu) and Nittsu (Perikanbin).

Types of Goods

The range of goods, which can be sent by delivery services, has been increasing constantly over the years. Today it includes regular parcels, oversized boxes, cooled or frozen foods, computers, ski and golf equipment, not to be wrinkled clothes, furniture, travel bags and suitcases.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Locations

Goods can be sent from your home by scheduling a pick up time with the nearest service center or from your hotel by inquiring at the hotel reception.

Alternatively, goods can be dropped off at most of the countless convenience stores found across Japan, a variety of other stores that display a takuhaibin sign, airports and takuhaibin service centers. Some stores, such as souvenir shops, can arrange purchased goods to be directly sent to a designated recipient.

Similarly, goods can be delivered to basically any address in Japan, including private homes, offices, hotels, airports and takuhaibin service centers.

Tourists with a lot of luggage can consider takuhaibin as a means to send their luggage from the airport to a hotel or between hotels, in order to avoid hauling heavy luggage onto crowded trains and up and down stairways.

You can find the counters of several takuhaibin delivery companies in the arrival lobbies of airports. If you intend to send luggage to a hotel, make sure to contact the hotel before doing so. Not all hotels may be able to accept deliveries due to lack of storage space.

Delivery Time and Cost

Delivery is usually on the next day, although for short distances same day deliveries may be possible. On the other hand, sending parcels to distant locations, such as Hokkaido or Okinawa, can take two days. Desired drop-off times can be specified.

Note that most companies also offer express options at a surcharge, which will ensure delivery within a shorter time frame.

The cost of using takuhaibin depends on the type, size and weight of the package and the destination. Below are some typical prices just to give a rough idea:

Regular parcel (30 cm x 30 cm x 30cm, less than 10 kg):
Within Greater Tokyo area: 1200 Yen
From Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto: 1300 Yen
From Tokyo to Kyushu: 1600 Yen
From Tokyo to Hokkaido: 1600 Yen
From Tokyo to Okinawa: 2300 Yen

Suitcase (80 cm x 40 cm x 30cm, less than 25 kg):
Within Greater Tokyo area: 1800 Yen
From Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto: 1900 Yen
From Tokyo to Kyushu: 2200 Yen
From Tokyo to Hokkaido: 2200 Yen
From Tokyo to Okinawa: 3900 Yen
Tokyo to Narita Airport: 2400 Yen
Osaka/Kyoto to Kansai Airport: 2400 Yen

Advice from Alex

  • Visit Yoyogi Park on the weekend (Sunday?)
  • Get out of Tokyo - one week is plenty to see the city
  • Himeji can be done in a day
  • Bring something to write with, as Japanese are loathe to speak English even though they understand it.
  • See Shibuya crossing
  • Buy a local subway pass for when in Tokyo; JR Pass is overkill for that week

Tokyo Prepaid Cards: Suica, PASMO

Although Tokyo's trains, subways and buses are operated by more than ten different companies with different fare systems, the Suica and PASMO prepaid cards can be used on all of them.

Suica is the rechargeable prepaid IC card of JR East, valid on virtually all trains, subways and buses in the Greater Tokyo, Sendai and Niigata regions. In addition, Suica can be used on JR trains in the Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima, Nagoya, Shizuoka and Sapporo regions.

PASMO is the rechargeable IC card of Tokyo's railway and subway companies other than JR, but it is also valid on JR trains. PASMO's predecessor, the non-rechargeable Passnet, was retired on March 15, 2008. Remaining Passnet balances can be refunded or transfered to PASMO.

Validity

Which trains can be used?
Suica/PASMO can be used to pay the fare for virtually all trains in the Greater Tokyo region, including JR trains, subways and monorails, but excluding shinkansen. For trains, which require a supplement fee, e.g. limited express trains, the supplement has to be purchased separately. The area of validity includes places as far as Hakone, Nikko, Narita Airport and Kamakura.

Which buses can be used?
Suica/PASMO can also be used on many buses in the greater Tokyo region.

Can Suica/PASMO be used outside of Tokyo?
Suica can also be used in place of Icoca on JR trains in the Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima regions, in place of Toica on JR trains in the Nagoya and Shizuoka regions, and in place of Kitaca on JR trains in the Sapporo region. PASMO, however, is limited to the Greater Tokyo area.

Basic Use

How to use Suica/PASMO?
When passing the ticket gates, hold the card close to the card reader (rather than inserting it into the ticket slot). The applicable fare will be automatically deducted when you exit through the ticket gate at your destination station. A card cannot be shared by multiple travelers at the same time. (How to use trains in Japan)

Ticket gate with Suica card reader

Is there a discount over regular tickets?
Suica/PASMO does not provide any discounts over regular tickets on train travel. However, if you use the cards on buses, you automatically collect "bus points" which are converted into credit to be used on bus fares.

Where to get Suica/PASMO?
Suica/PASMO cards can be purchased at vending machines and ticket counters in railway stations of Japan Railways (Suica) and other railway companies (PASMO) in the Greater Tokyo region. The initial cost consists of a refundable deposit of 500 Yen plus an initial amount to be charged onto the card. The initial amount is 1500 Yen in case of Suica and between 500 and 9500 Yen in case of PASMO.

Vending machine
How to recharge Suica/PASMO?
Suica/PASMO cards can be recharged at vending machines in railway stations of Japan Railways and other railway companies in the Greater Tokyo region. The maximum amount to be charged onto a card is 20,000 Yen.

How to check the current balance?
The current credit balance is shown on a small display whenever you pass a ticket gate. Furthermore, it can be checked at vending machines together with a usage history.

How to get back the 500 Yen refundable deposit?
Bring your card to the ticket counter of a JR (Suica) or non-JR (PASMO) railway station in the Greater Tokyo area in order to get back your 500 Yen deposit. Unused credit can also be refunded (210 Yen handling fee applies).

Is there an expiry date?
Cards become invalid if they are not used for ten years.

Card types
Besides regular cards, there are personalized cards which can be replaced if lost (500 Yen handling fee applies), commuter pass cards which also serve as a commuter pass, and cards for children.

Other Use

Shopping with Suica/PASMO
At an increasing number of shops (more than 10,000), such as convenience stores, kiosks and restaurants in and around railway stations, Suica/PASMO cards can be used instead of cash. Simply hold your card close to the card reader and you won't have to deal with change.

Suica/PASMO credit cards
There are various credit cards that double serve as Suica respectively PASMO cards. Some of them come with an option to automatically recharge Suica/PASMO when the remaining amount gets low. These credit cards are only available to residents of Japan.

Mobile Suica
Selected mobile phone models can be set up to serve as a Suica card. However, since mobile phone contracts require Japanese residency, Mobile Suica is not available to foreign tourists.

Narita Express and Suica

The Suica & NEX package for 3500 Yen (5000 Yen for the green car version) consist of 1) a one way trip from Narita Airport to Tokyo (or Yokohama) by Narita Express and 2) a Suica card worth 2000 Yen (500 Yen refundable deposit plus 1500 Yen worth of train fares), a great deal, considering that the regular one way fare of the Narita Express alone is around 3000 Yen or more!

The Suica & NEX package can be purchased at Narita Airport only by travelers who hold a non-Japanese passport. There is a limit of one purchase per person.

MUST buy suika + n'ex ticket

A Touch of Blusher: Beauty City Guide (1) - Tokyo

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

(Takashimaya Shinjuku:
one of my favorite department stores on earth)
(image from www.takashimaya.co.jp)

Today I start the Beauty City Guide series, which will take you to three cities and look at some of the best places to shop. These articles are mostly based on my own experiences and are not meant to be comprehensive. If you would like to add to them or ask a question, do please leave a comment.

This series simply has to start with Tokyo, probably the best place on this planet to shop for beauty products.

- WHERE TO GO -

If you have One Day

Don't hesitate and head straight to the Shinjuku area. The Isetan Department Store (Shinjuku branch) is within walking distance from Shinjuku Station. This buzzing emporium is one of the best places to see high-end Japanese beauty brands at a glance.

If you have more time, stop by Takashimaya Department Store (Shinjuku branch), which resides at the south entrance/exit of Shinjuku Station. The neat and structured (and almost regal) layout of the beauty department offers the ultimate browsing experience.

One Weekend

Also try:

- Seibu (Ikebukuro branch). I think this and the two above are probably the best three department stores for beauty.

- Ginza. For me, Shinjuku is great for pure retail indulgence, while the Ginza area has an upscale and less frantic atmosphere. Beauty-wise, try Mitsukoshi Ginza and Matsuya Ginza. (Matsuya is my favorite department store in this area). Also, stop by the OPAQUE boutique (across the street from Matsuya).

- Drugstores. They are relatively easy to find in central Tokyo, particularly around bigger public transportation stations. One of the largest chains is Matsumoto Kiyoshi, whose yellow sign is very easy to spot.

Drugstores carry budget beauty lines whose quality is by no means inferior, and these inexpensive brands offer a great way to try Japanese cosmetics if you have a smaller budget for beauty shopping. (You can also see some department store lines from Shiseido, Kanebo, Kosé, and Sofina in drugstores.) Discounts are offered on many lines, and the amount of reduction and the contents of the value sets can vary even in different branches under the same chain. It can be fun to browse around, but if you don't have much time and if you see something you like with a good price, consider buying it there and then.

One Week

Also try:

- Shu Uemura Omotesanto Boutique. A must for all Shu Uemura fans, it features exclusive items only available in this store.

- Shiseido Cosmetic Garden on Omotesanto. This store doesn't offer retail service. It is a showroom for all the Shiseido products. You can sit down, relax, and test out all the items without feeling any pressure to buy anything.

- Hakuho-do. This traditional Japanese business mainly deals with calligraphy supplies but also makes top-quality makeup brushes. Though expensive, they are must-sees for any makeup brush connoisseur. (Check the (English) link above for addresses. If you happen to be near the Los Angeles area, there is a branch in Torrance.)

- Asakusa. Close to Senso-ji Temple, Hyakusuke features traditional Japanese cosmetics used by geisha performers and for other traditional stage productions.

- MAMEW. If you are a mascara fanatic, stop by the MAMEW boutique, which is in the Daikanyama area.

- More department stores. Try Lumine, Odakyu, and Keio in Shinjuku (all surrounding Shinjuku Station), Tobu in Ikebukuro, Seibu in Sibuya, and Seibu in Yurakucho.

- More fun in drugstore goodie hunting. See if you can find the best deal! (Some other drugstore chains include Sundrug, Ainz & Tulpe and Plaza Style.)

- WHEN TO GO -

Unlike the UK, the seasonal sales in Japan don't seem to cover beauty items. So I personally think the best time to go to Tokyo for beauty shopping is simply right after most of the latest spring/fall makeup lines are available. This would be late February and late August (even though many are available in January/July). If you also want to try the latest spring/fall base makeup releases, go one month later.

- NOTES -

- Most

department stores close at around 8pm, while many drugstores remain open until later.

- Beauty items purchased in Japan are usually not returnable.

is probably one of the best places for beauty shopping when it comes to value for money on a regular basis. Find out why next week, along with my shopping recommendations.

Thank you for letting me know this, Kuri!

Metropolis - Restaurant Review - Yoshimura Soba

Restaurant Review
by Alex Vega

Yoshimura Soba

Noodles will never be the same again

Photos by Jorge Larañaga

Yoshimura Soba describes itself as “soba ni umaizaki,†or “fine sake with soba,†and never was a tagline more honest. The restaurant is located in Kichijoji, which for denizens of central Tokyo can seem fearfully far. But those familiar with the secrets of the suburbs will understand that, if anything, distance merely adds to the allure.

That said, however, Yoshimura Soba’s simple, wood-clad interior is quite unremarkable. It would be comfortingly so were it not for the generic jazz music—the sounds of a Seattle coffee shop. We were two visitors to out-of-town among locals: an elderly couple reading the newspaper as they ate their Sunday-evening soba; a young couple in their weekend sweatpants.

Soba this fresh takes 30 minutes to prepare, but the menu includes a large selection of otsumami dishes for sake. The quality is high and so are the prices, but appropriately not excessively. After the initial draught beer (Heartland, ¥700) we had famed Juyondai from Yamanashi (¥850) with horse sashimi (basashi, ¥1,000), and grilled duck miso (kamomisoyaki, ¥950). The basashi, dipped in sesame oil with salt and grated garlic, was the tenderest and most flavorful we can remember. As for the kamomisoyaki, a warm paste carefully presented on a large wooden spoon, the mixture of sweet duck and salty miso was exquisite—especially together with grilled spring onions—alongside both Juyondai and Suige Yamadanishiki Nama (¥1,200). In this case “nama†meant “unpasteurized,†which made the sake fresh, young and fruity—controversial compared with the refined drinkability that makes Juyondai so desired.

We had ordered two dishes of cold soba, one with nine types of tempura (tempura seiro, ¥2,200) and the other with black pork (kurobuta seiro, ¥1,600), an unusual meat to use with soba. The noodles, presented in beautiful, worn lacquer boxes, were paler than commonly available varieties and lightly speckled with flecks of bean. Dunked in simple, cold soba sauce with wasabi, daikon and onion, or rich, warm black pork broth, the noodles were the canvas on which the other flavors came to life. Likewise, the fine tempura batter complimented the foods inside (shrimp, eggplant, mushroom, ocra, etc.) with each crispy bite without drowning the flavors in oil. Apart from the short, sharp slurps produced by each mouthful of soba, our enjoyment was evident in our silence.

At less than ¥5,000 per person (from our experience), Yoshimura Soba is worth every yen spent there—and every minute spent getting there, if you must. It possesses the understated finesse that makes food lovers who enjoy quality and craftsmanship above society and spectacle feel privileged to live and eat in Japan.

Dining Diary
When popular restaurant Roti closed its Harumi Triton Square branch in March, there were a lot of sad diners. Fortunately, a new and exciting restaurant and wine bar has opened to take its place… or perhaps we should say “dramatic,†since that is how Garden Bay describes itself. Garden Bay offers modern Italian cuisine in a casual style at reasonable prices. The dinner menu is quite extensive. For starters, you can pick from carpaccio, tomato and basil salad, pancetta, terrine, or bacon and egg salad, for ¥680 to ¥1,380. For entrees, Garden Bay offers lots of grilled meats, seafood, pasta, rice dishes and some vegetarian fare. No entree item costs more than ¥2,400, and there is an ample selection of red and white wines from Italy, Spain, France, Argentina and Australia to go with your dinner. The restaurant is also popular with the lunchtime crowd.
Sets, which change daily, include pasta, a rice dish and a one-plate combination of salad, rice and meat. Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and Garden Bay offers the likes of tiramisu, gateau chocolate cake and fruit tart. The restaurant is available for parties as well, starting at ¥2,400 per person for a two-hour period. Having just opened, Garden Bay doesn’t yet have an English menu, but the staff are friendly and floor manager Kanako Uehara is more than happy to help with any inquiries.
